Piston Pumps
Piston Pumps are of Positive Displacement Pumps where the high-pressure seal reciprocates with the piston. Piston pumps can be used to move liquids or compress gases.
Types
Axial piston pump
An axial piston pump is a positive displacement pump that has a number of pistons in a circular array within a cylinder block. It can be used as a stand-alone pump, a hydraulic motor or an automotive air conditioning compressor.
Uses
Despite the problems indicated above this type of pump can contain most of the necessary circuit controls integrally to regulate flow and pressure, be very reliable and allow the rest of the hydraulic system to be very simple and inexpensive.
Axial piston pumps are used to power the hydraulic systems of jet aircraft, being gear-driven off of the turbine engine's main shaft, The system used on the F-14 used a 9-piston pump that produced a standard system operating pressure of 3000 psi and a maximum flow of 84 gallons per minute. Axial reciprocating motors are also used to power many machines. A common use of an axial reciprocating motor is to power small earth moving plant such as skid loader machines. Another use is to drive the screws of torpedoes.
Radial piston pump
A radial piston pump is a form of hydraulic pump. The working pistons extend in a radial direction symmetrically around the drive shaft, in contrast to the axial piston pump.
Construction
The stroke of each piston is caused by an eccentric drive shaft or an external eccentric tappet. When filling the workspace of the pumping pistons from inside it is called an inside impinged radial piston pump . If the workspace is filled from outside it's called an outside impinged radial piston pump .
Applications
Due to the hydrostatically balanced parts it is possible to use the pump with various hydraulic fluids like mineral oil, biodegradable oil, HFA (oil in water), HFC (water-glycol), HFD (synthetic ester) or cutting emulsion. That implies the following main applications for a radial piston pump:
- machine tools (e. g. displace of cutting emulsion, supply for hydraulic equipment like cylinders)
- high pressure
- units (HPU) (e. g. for overload protection of presses)
- test rigs
- automotive sector (e. g. automatic transmission, hydraulic suspension control in upper-class cars)
- plastic- and powder injection moulding
